For Sinners and for Saints

Whether you are a sinner or a saint, whether you sinned or you have been an angel; GEZONDIGD is the place to be on a Sunday morning, or actually; on any morning.

Situated on the Haarlemmerplein, on the border of the Westerpark and with the number ONE shopping street at it’s doorstep, this cosy little cafe offers honest, friendly food and service with a big smile. Zondigen means ‘sinning’ in Dutch, and the philosophy of owner Gerben van Ingen is that ‘a bit of sinning is very healthy’. And it is, definitely in this place where all products are home made of fresh, organic ingredients. You don’t have to feel guilty to sin at Gezondigd!

GEZONDIGD just opened it’s doors, perfect timing as we can all use a green juice just after Christmas, without completely giving up on all the munchies and crunchies that these dark months require. Owner Gerben van Ingen knows perfectly what you need, and he will make sure you get it. A bowl of yoghurt with granola and blueberries for the healthy fans or toast from Gebroeders Niemeijer and two boiled eggs if you are more traditional in your breakfasts…. It comes with a good cup of Stooker Coffee, a perfect cup of tea from the Tea Bar on the Haarlemmerstraat or a freshly made juice (green, yellow, orange or red). Is there a better way to start your morning? I don’t think so!

Ok, so that is breakfast. But there is more. Lunch is a whole new affair here, with amazing sandwiches such as Biltongsalad (ask the South Africans about Biltong – they love it!) with radish and coriander on a nice slice of bread, or what about some homemade mackerel salad on your sandwich? The salads are also hard to beat; courgetti (spaghetti made of courgette) with red fruits, cashews and red onion or smoked chicken with avo and beetroot…

The menu at Gezondigd consists of four options per item. Four different breakfasts, four different sandwiches, four different salads and four different sweets. Because yes – there is room for sinning in this place. My favourite is the Bananabread with nuts, but if you have a sweet tooth go for the muffin with lemon curd!

Ps. all items can also be ordered for take-away. In case you are in a rush…..

And there is a bit more to tell about this place. There is a sharing library – you can bring an old book and change it for a new one. It’s also the perfect place to sit down, plug in your laptop (the counter at the big window offers power plugs underneath) and work your day away. My personal favourite representing the owners character? If you order something here, you can add an extra Euro or three extra Euros to your bill. Your one Euro will be used to give a cup of coffee to someone who cannot afford it. Your three Euros will be used for the same purpose, only instead of coffee it will be a juice. On the wall next to the barcounter you can see how many cups of coffee and juices have been donated by clients already. It will definitely put a smile on your face!
